Half a century of shaping Tanzania's financial minds.
From a modest training centre established by an Act of Parliament to the nation's premier institution for finance, banking, insurance and accountancy — this is the story of the Institute of Finance Management.
The Institute of Finance Management was established in 1972 through an Act of the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania, with a clear national purpose: to build the professional and managerial capacity of the country's emerging financial sector.
In the years following independence, Tanzania faced an acute shortage of trained personnel in banking, insurance, taxation and public financial management. The government resolved to create a dedicated institution — one that would combine rigorous academic study with the practical skills demanded by banks, insurers, regulators and the Treasury.
From its first cohorts of certificate and diploma students, the Institute grew steadily in scope and stature. It progressively earned the authority to award its own diplomas, then degrees, and today confers qualifications from certificate to doctoral level, guided throughout by its enduring motto: Jifunze Uhudumie — "Learn to Serve."
A journey told in decades
The Institute is founded
IFM is established by an Act of Parliament under the Ministry of Finance to train middle- and senior-level personnel for Tanzania's banking, insurance, and financial institutions.
Building the foundations
The Institute establishes its certificate and diploma programmes in banking, insurance, accountancy and taxation, becoming the principal source of qualified finance professionals for the young nation.
Reform and expansion
As Tanzania liberalises its economy and financial sector, IFM broadens its curriculum, strengthens its faculty and deepens ties with the Bank of Tanzania, commercial banks and regulators.
Full degree-awarding status
Accredited by the National Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, the Institute begins awarding its own bachelor's degrees, marking its evolution into a fully-fledged institution of higher learning.
Postgraduate & doctoral study
IFM launches master's and doctoral programmes, expands to regional centres, and invests in digital learning — cementing its role as a centre of research and consultancy for East Africa.
A national institution of standing
With over 12,000 students, a national network of campuses and more than 40 programmes across three pillars — teaching, research and consultancy — IFM remains the benchmark for finance education in the region.
To be a leading centre of excellence in finance, management and allied disciplines in Africa.
To provide quality education, research and consultancy that develops competent professionals to serve society.
